Stephen Cranes The Monster as the Most Important work of short fiction
ââ¬Å"At once a childrenââ¬â¢s tale, a grim social satire, an ambitious study of ethical responsibility, a painful examination of race in America, a devastating account of the village virusâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"The Monsterâ⬠by Stephen Crane, has been interpreted as the most significant work of short fiction written before 1900. It is a compilation of different issues used to highlight the racist attitudes and xenophobia evident in the USA after slavery was abolished in 1863. Despite the fictional plot, the views of the white population of Whilomville are based on fact, as the racist feelings were still palpable evinced by derogatory terms such as ââ¬Å"Negroâ⬠. Along with the race struggle, social satire is apparent, as evidently the story is classified as Southern Gothic. With a Gothic overtone Crane is able to explore the satirical society in which the story is set, to delve into concerns of social satire, ethical responsibility, race struggles and the ââ¬Å"village virusâ⬠. Throughout ââ¬Å"The Monsterâ⬠, Crane exemplifies the social hypocrisy and identifies this as an issue in contemporary society. Before Henry became ââ¬Å"frightfully searedâ⬠, he was high in social status. This is portrayed through descriptions of the towns-people of Whilomville, which is place loosely based on Craneââ¬â¢s childhood hometown of Port Jervis, New Jersey. He was a ââ¬Å"well-bred gentlemanâ⬠, who was constantly given ââ¬Å"quiet admonitions and complimentsâ⬠. Miss Bella Farragut exclaimed that ââ¬Å"Misteh Johnsingâ⬠was simply ââ¬Å"divineâ⬠, as they were soon to be engaged. Their opinions though, were greatly reversed after the fire incident, when ââ¬Å"his face had simply been burned awayâ⬠. When Alek, his ââ¬Å"olââ¬â¢ frienââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ , first saw Henry after the accident, he ââ¬Å"gasped for a second, and then ââ¬Å"yelled the yell of... ...o mock and ridicule Henry, by chasing him, ââ¬Å"firing rocksâ⬠. Similarly, hierarchy is central to society. There is a reversal in the social ladder, as Henry was a dominant figure, but after the incident this was overturned due to his appearance. However, it is ironic as Henryââ¬â¢s deed is the indisputable act, as he does not criticise others, and he performs the act of ultimate kindness ââ¬â jeopardising his own life to rescue Jimmie from the fire. ââ¬Å"The Monsterâ⬠is depicted as the most significant work of short fiction written before 1900, primarily because Crane has used the Southern Gothic subgenre, in order to accumulate an abundance of issues such as racism and the ââ¬Å"village virusâ⬠. Crane exploited small-town experiences to illustrate the flaws in the community, to present a microcosm and a warning for the readers, to deter them from becoming the ostensible monsters.

Puritianism and Literary Techniques in The Scarlet...
Nathaniel Hawthorne has made a beautiful, admirable, extraordinary approach in this novel said Henry James regarding The Scarlet Letter. It has the beauty and harmony of all original and complete conceptions and its weaker spots are not of its essence, but mere light flaws and inequalities of surface. The novel has the inexhaustible charm and mystery of great works of art. It has a high style of polish as well as a charming freshness. Hawthorne has cultivated with great industry his natural sense of language, his turn for saying things lightly in touchy mood, picturesquely yet simply, and for infusing a gently colloquial tone into matter of the most unfamiliar import. The Scarlet Letter deals with different aspects, which are portrayedâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Hawthornes careful distinction between the type of fiction, the romance, and another type, called the novel, is one that we no longer observe today, when any long fiction is called a novel. But Hawthornes words guide us to the perception that he was writing about what goes on inside people, the truth of the human heart, rather than what goes on outside and around world. He called this novel a romance, not a novel. In The Custom House he suggests that life seen in the sunlight is the stuff of the novel, while the familiar seen in the moonlight and warmed slightly by the light of the coal-fire is the stuff of the romance. A romance, while it must not deviate from the truth of the human heart, has a right to present that truth under circumstances, which to a great extent are the writers own choosing and creation. While a novel is a realistic representation of human nature, human life, a romance may present these under circumstances, which seem improbable, extraordinary, or fanciful, shrouded in an atmosphere of mystery. Romance must not stray from the truths of human heart and, as regards its structure, must subject itself to artistic laws. In the writing of the story, Hawthorne depended to a very large extent upon actual persons, places and events pertaining to seventeenth-century Boston. The realistic elements in The Scarlet Letter far outnumber and outweigh the marvelous elements. The punishment of Hester Prynne for her sin of adultery is thoroughly

High Crime Rates And Stricter Law - 1231 Words
Over population in prisons are becoming a frequent problem. High crime rates and stricter law are causes a mass incarnation level. Due to budget cuts Ohio is letting 6,000 convicted felons out early. Prisoners with low-level drug offences are eligible for early releasement. These criminals will be released to half-way houses. There they will be monitored by probation officers who will help them reenter society. This was a new idea presented by the prison chief Gary Mohr. He presented a new budget to the Ohioan government with the idea to spend less money on prisons and more money towards rehabilitation programs. Chief Morhââ¬â¢s argumentative point was, ââ¬Å"Do we invest in people or in bricks and mortar? To build and operate one prison for two decades would cost Ohioans one billion dollarsâ⬠. Keeping jails operating is a hefty expenses. A study by Public Safety Performance Project of the Pew Charitable Trusts showed that Ohioââ¬â¢s crime rate dropped 23% in 1993 -20 12 but surprisingly incarceration rate rose 17%. Hopes for the rerelease is to save the state tax payers money, as well as, to fix a broken system. I believe that the Nixonââ¬â¢s war on drugs campaign, produced inefficient drug laws and taxpayer money should be spent on rehabilitation programs rather than building brink and morters. I understand that money controls the world, and there is no denying that our country is in massive debt. Each state is trying to find the best ways to budget tax payerââ¬â¢s money. A Brief Note On Fighting Alzheimer s Disease - 1038 Words
Shay Haluzak ELA 6-7 Mrs. Greenwood Research Paper January 18, 2017 Fighting Alzheimerââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"So now, we feel it is important to share it with you. In opening our hearts, we hope this might promote greater awareness of this condition. Perhaps it will encourage a clearer understanding of the individuals and families who are affected by it.â⬠This was part of the fortieth president Ronald Reaganââ¬â¢s speech announcing the start of his battle with Alzheimerââ¬â¢s Disease that would last ten years (Adams 21). Alzheimerââ¬â¢s is a disease that affects millions of Americans each year. Fortunately, doctors know what symptoms to look for in Alzheimerââ¬â¢s disease. Alzheimerââ¬â¢s disease is the most common form of dementia, where it affects the part of the brainâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Daily tasks such as eating, bathing, walking, and talking become a lot harder (Adams 38). This all happens because of proteins called Beta-Amyloid proteins, which are proteins that clump and form plaque on the brains of people with AD (99). The proteins cause neurons in the brain to lose communication and die (61). Though there is no cure for Alzheimerââ¬â¢s disease, there are aids that can help. There are two medications that help slow down the progression, memantine and cholinesterase inhibitors (Adams 68). There are also simple everyday things people can do to decrease their risk of AD such as exercise (71). Long-term memories tend to last longer than more recent experiences so looking at old photos can also help (72). Early diagnosis can really help, it will give doctors a chance to put the person on medication that will slow down the progression of AD (24). Mental exercise and frequent social interactions have shown to help reduce risks (84). Even though many people have suffered with Alzheimerââ¬â¢s disease, Ronald Reagan is just one case. On November 5, 1994 former president of the United States, Ronald Reagan announced the beginning of his battle with AD (Wagner 92). He announced the start by sitting down and writing a heartfelt speech to the public about raising awareness for the disease and helping other families who are dealing with AD have a clearer understanding about it (Adams 21).
