I am a professor and am always going to be asked this question when I teach. My first reaction is that it depends on the questioner. One could come up with the same answer when speaking to one of my colleagues who writes essays in public discourse, but it is an obvious double standard.You know that I look at this question differently. You may feel that I have put the 'essay title' and the 'story title' in quotation marks because of some sort of political purpose. You may say it is a way of expressing myself. Or it could be that I just cannot be bothered to distinguish between the two and some sort of play on words that express my attitude. The best answer is that there are so many different factors that go into the process of writing an essay that it is impossible to put the 'essay title' and the 'story title' in quotation marks.In my experience , when writing an essay do you have to put story titles in quotation marks and even if you do they don't really have to make sense. It is really much better if you don't have to put it in quotation marks. I know this from experience. When I first started writing essays in public discourse (you should know by now that it's been the subject of my research for over a decade) I always used to put quotes around the essay titles in order to have some form of identification between the essay and the quote. That way, the essay would show up in print and people could see that it was the work of one person.Now that I know that the act of putting the quotations around the title and the quote does not have a meaning I no longer use the quotation marks. You know that in fact I think that people who use quotation marks to give some form of identity to the essay just get it all wrong. They know that you should put the 'essay title' and the 'story title' in quotation marks, but they don't really un derstand what these pieces of text mean. Even if they do they still use them incorrectly. They don't want to put quotation marks around the actual title, but they use them incorrectly when it comes to the actual sentences in the essay.The only time that you should put the 'essay title' and the 'story title' in quotation marks is when you are describing the actual essay. When describing an actual essay, the points that are being made in the essay are usually discussed in one paragraph and then in one paragraph you would be quoting other things that you have said in that paragraph. It makes sense that if you are quoting someone else in that paragraph that you would put the 'essay title' and the 'story title' in quotation marks.But the only time that you should put the 'essay title' and the 'story title' in quotation marks is when you are actually describing the actual essay. Then you can describe the actual sentence in two or three sentences and then put the 'essay title' and the 'sto ry title' in quotation marks. This makes sense, doesn't it?So when writing an essay do you have to put story titles in quotation marks? If you have put the essay title and the quote in quotation marks, they will make more sense when the actual essay is read and understood.
